Effortless Vacation Hair with NBR Extensions: A Guide by The Light Collective

Hey, Sis…

We all know a good vacation needs four essentials: the sun, a great playlist, vibey outfits, and effortless hair! As a hair extension specialist and owner of The Light Collective in San Antonio, Texas, specializing in Natural Beaded Rows (NBR) Extensions, I’m here to help you achieve that effortless, stunning hair that’s perfect for your summer adventures.

My Beachy Roots and Summer Playlist

Growing up just three hours away from the beautiful panhandle beaches of Alabama and Florida, I had the luxury of sun-kissed hair and sandy toes all summer long. Now, living in San Antonio, I find myself dreaming of those beach days by my pool, vibing to my 2020 Beach Playlist. My summer playlist is a mix of nostalgic throwbacks, Morgan Wallen hits (shout out to Sarah Hair Candy if you’re reading this!), and anything that’s sing-along-worthy. If you disagree, just mind ya business!

The Dos for Perfect Summer Hair

Keep Leave-In and a Brush Handy

Always have a leave-in conditioner and a brush at the ready! I recommend the Un.Tangled spray, which is a UV protectant and a detangler. It will protect your hair color and keep your extensions from matting. Before heading out for a beach or outdoor adventure, spray your hair with Un.Tangled and gently brush through it. For extra protection, don’t forget to wear a hat!

Opt for Tight Braids or a Neat Bun

Prevent hardcore tangles and matting by wearing your hair in tight braids or a neat, ballerina bun on top of your head. Picture this: you’re on a bachelorette trip at the beach or lake, feeling like JLo with the wind in your hair, and enjoying High Noons without a care in the world. But when you get home to shower, you realize you have a small animal entangled in your row. Let’s avoid this! Put your hair in cute braids and your future self will thank you.

Remember Chlorine is Not Hair-Friendly

Chlorine is a chemical that’s harsh on hair. Apply Un.Tangled to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, then tightly secure it in a braid or ponytail before hitting the pool.

Contact Your Stylist for Hair Emergencies

If your hair gets matted or turns orange, contact me immediately. Don’t try to be a superhero here. While you may be able to work out matting with a fine-tooth comb, it’s always best to consult your stylist.

Stick to Your Hair Care Routine

Keep up with your regular hair care routine, even while traveling. Pack your Mini Murphys for emergency hair washing. Sticking to your normal routine will prevent your hair from getting dry or damaged from common summer activities.

The Don’ts to Avoid Hair Disasters

Avoid Just Any Sunscreen

The type of sunscreen you use matters, especially for hair extensions. Be aware of the ingredient Azobenzene. When I’m traveling, I always have mineral-based sunscreens like Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen, Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen, or Coola Mineral Body Organic Sunscreen. And, of course, Un.Tangled by Kevin Murphy. Protect your investment because most sunscreens have chemicals that can turn your extensions orange or peach-colored.

Never Skip Heat Protectant

Don’t go out in the sun without using a heat protectant on your hair. Heat protectants can shield your hair from the sun’s rays too. I like to lather up with Un.Tangled before spending the day outside.

Don’t Leave Hair Braided After Swimming

After swimming, quickly remove your braids, rinse with freshwater, apply more leave-in conditioner, and gently brush out your hair. Sometimes braids can tangle your hair, so follow these steps to avoid that.

Don’t Ignore Hair Matting

If matting happens, don’t ignore it. I get it, sometimes matting is inevitable. Bring your wet brush and a fine-tooth comb with you on vacation. The comb is the best tool to slowly work out matting. Leave-in conditioner, freshwater, and consistent brushing will be your triple threat this summer to prevent any kind of matting.
